Roger Gracie Gi Patch
I’m just now watching 2008 Mundials. Dai Yoshioka comes out in the finals wearing an unbleached gi with no patches representing a fictional team (Tokyo Yellowmans). Have to love that, especially the self-deprecating humor of the team name. This is one of the aspects in which I personally like the judo culture better than jiu jitsu.
Anyone have any news on when Roger is planning on releasing his new. /r/bjj Patches by Enois Clothing. Google Calendar automatically puts a gi on my bjj. Gracie Barra Patches??? I am interested in the regular Carlos. Roger Gracie, the unsatisfied three-time champ. Roger Gracie is the black belt with the biggest buzz.
Patches and dramatic emphasis on a team you represent is a little silly. Many people I respect feel otherwise.
This is just my modest opinion. (Plus it helps that Yoshioka has amazing jiu jitsu. I’ve never seen anyone so relaxed under a constant high-intensity assault of his open guard.) Don’t get me wrong, I love being part of a team.
When I wrestled in high school, lining up with my team by weight and facing the opposing team in a western-style showdown was always awesome. We supported each other, and everyone fought that much harder because we needed their points for the team win. On the other hand, wrestling (as well as jiu jitsu, judo, mma) is fundamentally an individual sport.
It’s just you out there. The beauty of the game is in the clash of individual wills. It’s a test of who is the better man, and a big patch on your back always seemed to me to be a deviation from that ideal of pure one-on-one competition. This entry was posted in and tagged, on.

Hey all - I'm a little up on the air as to what to do here. I recently relocated to a new area and was checking out local gyms. The one closest to me / easiest access is a GB school. Unfortunately, I came to realize that they require you to wear GB Gi's at all times, even in just training.edit - as others have pointed out, and I forgot to mention - this includes wearing only a GB rashguard under the gi (required), and GB shorts if you are training no-gi. The gi's also run around $160 each. From someone who has about 5 different gi's already, this is a pretty big bummer since that is basically money down the drain. There are some other schools somewhat close, but due to traffic would take me a bit longer to get to.
GB is about 5 mins away; others could vary to about 20-30 mins, and while that isn't necessarily horrible, I really value the convenience of the GB school being so close. What would you guys do? I talked to the instructor and they don't even allow you to re-patch your current Gi's with GB patches. They have to be GB gi's. I just feel like I'm getting ripped off. I have had the privilege of training at a few different academies over my BJJ career, and have a wrestling background, and know that frankly most anywhere you go nowadays you can find pretty solid instruction. Sure, some places may be a little better than others, but for the most part, everywhere I have trained has been good.
No matter where I have gone, people have always seemed to have a stigma against GB. Everyone ALWAYS seems to have some type of not-so-positive opinion on them. So that also comes into play. And there is no doubt the Gracie family are most definitely 'business minded'. I think the Gi thing just really ruins it. The local GB (where my wife goes) doesn't care as much about the rashguard under the gi. She doesn't have any GB rashguards actually, and it hasn't been an issue.

With regards to the gi-they've said you can put the patches on any (appropriately coloured) gi and be ok. Patches can be gotten off ebay. Also, I will occasionally see a GB gi on craigslist or ebay for a decent price. I'd ask why they don't allow patches on a non-GB gi.
But yeah, it is a rip off. It emphasizes very clearly to methat GB as a whole (not necessarily the instructors at any particular location) care more about making money than gaining students.
