The Remembrance Of Death And The Afterlife
Book Description This is the first English translation of the last chapter of the Revival of the Religious Sciences. After expounding his Sufi philosophy of death and showing the importance of the contemplation of human mortality to the mystical way of self-purification, Ghazali takes his readers through the stages of the future life: the vision of the Angels of the Grave, the Resurrection, the Intercession of the Prophet, and finally, the torments of Hell, the delights of Paradise and – for the elect – the beatific vision of God’s Countenance. In this new edition, the Islamic Texts Society has included a translation of Imam Ghazali’s own Introduction to the Revival of the Religious Sciences which gives the reasons that caused him to write the work, the structure of the whole of the Revival, and places each of the chapters in the context of the others. Please refer to the Islamic Texts Society for further translations from Al-Ghazali. Winter is Shaykh Zayed Lecturer in Islamic Studies at the University of Cambridge. ‘ I warmly recommend Winter’s translation to everyone interested in Islamic eschatology and Islamic thought.’ Annemarie Schimmel ‘This book is an excellent translation of a very important work This translation, and the series as a whole, are significant contributions to our understanding of this key figure in Islamic intellectual thought.’ Oliver Leaman, BRISMES Bulletin ‘Winter’s rendering combines exactness with fluency and dignity of style.

Life Death Afterlife
Compiled by 1. I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love. Leo Buscaglia 2.
They that love beyond the world cannot be separated by it. For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity. Death cannot kill what never dies. William Penn 3. The body is only a garment. How many times you have changed your clothing in this life, yet because of this you would not say that you have changed. Similarly, when you give up this bodily dress at death you do not change.
You are just the same, an immortal soul, a child of God. Paramahansa Yogananda 4. In one sense there is no death.
The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond departure. You will always feel that life touching yours, that voice speaking to you. He/She lives on in your life and in the lives of all others that knew him/her.
Angelo Patri 5. Your end, which is endless, is as a snowflake dissolving in the pure air. Zen Teaching 6. I give you this one thought to keep.
I am with you still. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on the snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning’s hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone. I am with you still in each new dawn.
Native American Poem 7. Seeing death as the end of life is like seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean. David Searls 8. Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and very dear. Anonymous 9. I thought that I would miss you so, and never find my way.
And then I heard the angel say 'She's with you every day.' 'The sun, the moon, the wind, the stars, will forever be around, reminding you of the love you shared, and the peace she's finally found.' Unknown 10.
Death is simply a shedding of the physical body, like the butterfly shedding its cocoon It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and be able to grow. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross 11. Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without affect, without the trace of a shadow on it.
Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was. There is absolutely unbroken continuity.
Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. Henry Scott Holland 12. Let children walk with Nature, let them see the beautiful blendings and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life. John Muir 13. You would know the secret of death.
But how shall you find it unless you seek it in the heath of life? The owl whose night-bound eyes are blind unto the day cannot unveil the mystery of light. If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and sea are one. For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? Kahlil Gibran 14. I am not gone I remain here beside you Just in a different form Look for me in your heart And there you will find me in our love which forever lives on In those moments when you feel alone Look for me in your thoughts And there you will find me in sweet memories that burn strong Every time a tear Forms in your beautiful eyes Look up to the heavens And there you will see me Smiling down from God’s glorious skies Injete Chesoni 15. So say it loud and let it ring We are all a part of everything The future, present and the past Fly on proud bird You're free at last Charlie Daniels Interested in learning what.really. happens in the After Life?
